Don’t Overload Sockets & Extension Leads
One of the most common issues during hot weather is overloaded extension leads.
When multiple high-power appliances are plugged into one extension lead—such as:
- Fans
- Portable air conditioning units
- Outdoor cooking equipment
- Garden tools
—it can cause overheating and increase the risk of electrical faults.
A good rule is:
⚡ Avoid plugging too many appliances into one socket
⚡ Never “daisy-chain” extension leads together
⚡ Use properly rated outdoor equipment where needed
Be Careful with Older Appliances
Hot weather often means appliances suddenly get pulled out after sitting unused for months.
We’ve all had that moment where:
“This fan definitely worked last summer…” 😂
Older appliances can sometimes develop faults over time, especially if:
- Cables have become damaged
- Plugs are worn
- Dust has built up internally
- Connections have loosened
If anything smells unusual, feels excessively hot, or causes tripping, it’s best to stop using it and get it checked.
Outdoor Electrics Need Extra Attention
Garden sockets, extension leads, and outdoor electrical equipment all need to be suitable for external use.
During warmer weather, people often use:
- Pressure washers
- Lawn equipment
- Outdoor lighting
- Garden entertainment setups
Always ensure:
✔️ Outdoor sockets are weatherproof
✔️ Extension leads are suitable for outdoor use
✔️ Connections are kept dry and protected
Watch for Warning Signs
Some common signs that your electrics may be struggling include:
⚡ Sockets or plugs becoming unusually warm
⚡ Flickering lights
⚡ Tripping fuse boards
⚡ Buzzing sounds
⚡ Burning smells
These should never be ignored, especially during periods of heavier electrical use.
Fuse Boards & Modern Protection
Older consumer units (fuse boards) may not include the modern safety protection found in newer installations.
Modern boards with RCD or RCBO protection are designed to:
- Reduce the risk of electric shock
- Help detect faults quickly
- Improve overall electrical safety
If your fuse board is older or you’re unsure about its condition, it may be worth having it checked.
Enjoy the Sunshine Safely ☀️
Most electrical problems can be avoided with a bit of common sense and early attention to warning signs.
